Harrisburg University provides IRS Form 1098-T to all students who were enrolled during the previous tax year. The main purpose of this form is to help students determine if they are eligible to receive one of two possible tax credits: The American Opportunity credit and the Lifetime Learning credit. This form will be mailed to the student’s official legal address no later than January 31. A Social Security Number (SSN) or Tax Identification Number (ITIN) is required to be reported to the IRS and needs to be provided at the time of enrollment or upon the University's request. Particularly applicable to international students, a student with a missing tax identification number may request a 1098-T by completing IRS Form W-9S at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw9s.pdf and submitting it to the Business Office. The student can also update the missing SSN/ ITIN via myHU > Finance > SSN/ ITIN Form.

This form is informational only and should not be considered as tax opinion or advice. It serves to alert students that they may be eligible for federal income tax education credits. Students can request their complete account statement by creating a ticket with our Office.

IMPORTANT: Receipt of Form 1098-T does not imply eligibility for the tax credit. It is the taxpayer’s responsibility to determine the amount of qualified tuition and fees paid and to determine whether they are eligible for any tax credits. While University employees are available to answer any questions regarding the information reported on Form 1098-T, University employees are not permitted to provide tax advice. Please refer to http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p970.pdf or consult your tax advisor to determine eligibility.
